What is RYA yacht training? & RYA yacht training guide
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) is the UK’s national governing body for boating and yachting. Its training system is a structured, globally recognised programme of practical and theoretical courses. Each level builds on the previous one, creating a clear pathway from absolute beginner to professional Yachtmaster. The system covers every aspect of sailing: navigation, seamanship, boat handling, safety procedures, meteorology, passage planning, and skippering skills. RYA certifications are recognised by maritime authorities, charter companies, and commercial yacht operators worldwide. Completing this training pathway opens doors that few other qualifications can match. At Commodore Yachting, we teach the full RYA syllabus from Competent Crew through to Yachtmaster, all in the challenging waters of the Solent.
Theory vs practical: the dual training path
RYA training divides into two complementary streams: theory courses and practical courses. Understanding the difference is essential for planning your training journey. Theory Courses cover the knowledge side of sailing, navigation, collision regulations, meteorology, tides, passage planning, and safety. These can be completed online at your own pace or in a classroom over several days. The key theory courses are Day Skipper Theory (recommended before practical Day Skipper) and Yachtmaster Theory (required for Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster candidates). Practical Courses take place aboard a real yacht with an RYA instructor. You live aboard for the duration, combining hands-on learning with overnight passages, berthing manoeuvres, and real-world decision making. All practical courses include accommodation, meals, tuition, and use of foul-weather gear. We strongly recommend completing the relevant theory before your practical course. Students who arrive prepared make faster progress and get more value from their time on the water. Our online Day Skipper theory course is the perfect starting point.
Start yachting: your first step
Start Yachting is a two-day introductory course designed for complete beginners. No prior experience is required. You learn the basics of handling a yacht: helming, sail trimming, safety procedures, ropework, and what it is like to live aboard. Groups are limited to five students, ensuring plenty of one-on-one time with your instructor. By Sunday afternoon you will have taken the helm in open water, trimmed sails, and helped moor alongside. Many students describe this course as eye-opening, it reveals a world they did not know existed. Prerequisites: None. Just a willingness to learn.
Duration: 2 days.
What you learn: Helming, sail handling, basic safety, living aboard, basic navigation terms.
Competent crew: building real skills
Competent Crew is a five-day course that turns you into a useful crew member on any yacht. This is where the real skills develop. You cover ropework, sail handling, navigation basics, helming in all conditions, safety procedures, and living aboard as part of a team. It is about more than just technical skills. You become part of a crew, learning to communicate effectively under pressure, anticipate the skipper’s needs, and handle yourself confidently in rough weather. One student was terrified of the weather on day one. By day five she was on the helm in a force 6 with a huge grin. That transformation happens regularly on our courses. Prerequisites: None. Start Yachting is helpful but not required.
Duration: 5 days.
What you learn: Ropework, sail handling, helming, navigation basics, safety, team communication. Full details on our RYA Competent Crew course page.
Day skipper: taking command
Day Skipper is our most popular course and the point where you stop being crew and start being skipper. It is a major achievement in any RYA yacht training journey. You learn passage planning, pilotage, navigation, boat handling under power and sail, and the responsibilities of skippering a yacht on short daylight passages. The practical course runs for five days with a maximum of five students per instructor. You will plan and execute short coastal passages, enter and leave harbours, pick up moorings, anchor, and handle emergencies. By the end you will be capable of skippering a small yacht in familiar waters during daylight. Prerequisites: Competent Crew (or equivalent experience), plus Day Skipper theory certificate.
Duration: 5 days practical, approximately 40 hours for theory.
What you learn: Passage planning, pilotage, navigation, skippering, boat handling, safety management. Our online Day Skipper theory can be completed flexibly before you join us on the water. Browse our RYA Day Skipper practical course page for dates and details.
Coastal skipper: advanced passage making
Coastal Skipper is the most demanding practical course before Yachtmaster. You plan and execute longer coastal passages, up to 60 nautical miles, often including night navigation. The course pushes your decision making, passage planning, and boat handling to a higher level. You learn advanced pilotage, passage planning for tidal constraints, night navigation using lights and electronic aids, meteorology interpretation, and skippering in restricted waters. Candidates emerge confident to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night in moderate conditions. Prerequisites: Day Skipper practical, 15 days at sea, 300 logged miles, at least 4 days as skipper.
Duration: 5 days.
What you learn: Night navigation, advanced passage planning, pilotage in restricted waters, leadership. Full details on our RYA Coastal Skipper course page.
Yachtmaster: the professional standard
Yachtmaster is the pinnacle of the RYA training system and the most respected sailing qualification worldwide. It is the minimum requirement for anyone looking to work professionally as a skipper. The Yachtmaster exam is a rigorous two-day assessment conducted by an independent RYA examiner, not your instructor. Preparation is intensive. Candidates must demonstrate mastery of every aspect of sailing: boat handling under all conditions, advanced navigation, passage planning, leadership, crew management, and emergency response. The failure rate is significant, which is why the qualification carries such weight. Two Yachtmaster levels exist. Yachtmaster Coastal requires 800 logged miles and is ideal for those skippering coastal passages. Yachtmaster Offshore requires 2,500 logged miles, including passages over 60 miles, and qualifies you for professional commercial endorsement. We are proud that many Commodore Yachting graduates now skipper yachts in the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and beyond. Our Yachtmaster Fast Track programme is designed to take you from Day Skipper to exam-ready in an intensive structured schedule. Prerequisites: Coastal Skipper practical, Yachtmaster theory, significant sea time and logged miles.
Duration: 2-day exam (preparation varies from weeks to months).
What it qualifies you for: Professional skippering, yacht delivery, charter industry, superyacht careers.
Career opportunities with RYA qualifications
RYA qualifications open up a wide range of career paths on the water. Many people begin with a passion for sailing and discover they can turn it into a profession. Common career routes include: charter skipper in popular cruising grounds such as the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, or Croatia; yacht delivery crew, moving vessels between ports and countries across oceans; sailing instructor, teaching the next generation of sailors; superyacht deck crew, starting in entry-level roles and progressing to officer positions; and flotilla skipper, leading groups of charter yachts on organised holidays through the Greek islands or the Adriatic. Commercial Yachtmaster certification is a requirement for most paid skipper roles. Beyond Yachtmaster, additional endorsements include Commercial Endorsement (required to work commercially), Powerboat Level 2, and VHF Radio licence, all of which we can help arrange.
