How much is the RYA VHF/SRC course?

The cost of the RYA VHF course varies depending on if you just want to sit the course, or do the exam as well afterwards. There is no requirement for you to sit the course, before attending the exam, however your greatest chance of success and passing the exam is reliant on you successfully completing the course.

What is in the RYA VHF Course Syllabus?

The course covers the essential aspects of VHF radio operations, including the use of DSC, emergency protocols, and general radio etiquette.

The basic syllabus is:

  • Background information on the GMDSS system and its equipment and licensing requirements
  • Radio rules and regulations
  • Operation of marine VHF equipment including DSC functions
  • The phonetic alphabet
  • Basic radio language and protocols including pro words such as over, say again, out etc.
  • Correct use of the various channels
  • How to make calls to other stations
  • How to send a Distress Alert and Distress Message (Mayday)
  • How to send an urgency alert and a safety call
  • Sit the written exam upon successful completion of which you will be issued with the ” United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland Certificate of Competence and Authority to Operate”

The examiners are really nice, friendly and relaxed people. They are not out there to fail you, they are there to make sure you are competent at using the VHF radio.

During the exam if you get flustered or have any momentary laps in knowledge, please don’t be afraid to ask your examiner for a quick break, nip outside for some fresh air and to quickly brush back up on your knowledge.

The biggest thing here is not to worry or panic.
