What to Bring: Documentation and Logbooks

When attending your course, please ensure you have all relevant certification documents and your personal logbook with you on the first day. If you’re participating as a Competent Crew student, you’ll receive the G158 logbook when you arrive if purchased as part of your course package. This helps us keep a clear record of your progress and ensures all necessary administrative requirements are met right from the start.

Where to Take This Course

You can join the RYA Day Skipper Sail Practical course at a variety of recognised training centres throughout the UK and abroad. Many well-established sailing schools operate out of key locations like ourselves and go to a lot of places around the Solent, such as Cowes, Hamble and Portsmouth and Southampton, just to name a few. You can do your course at many training centres based on your preferred location or choose from a list of reputable providers to find a course that fits your schedule. How ever a lot of insurance companies do hold courses done in tide in the Solent as a higher standard than those done in the Mediterranean. Remember the Solent is where all the best sailors start their journey so we would recommend you join us here to.

If you’re unsure where to start, feel free to drop us a message—we’re happy to recommend popular options and help match you with a course that suits your needs and sailing aspirations.

Fancy going VIP and having your own exclusive private training course for you and your friends or family? You can book the whole yacht just for your own exclusive course from only £749 per person. Enjoy the training course in style, with up to five people on the boat being taught by one of our friendly, experienced RYA Yachtmaster Instructors.

Why To Keep Your Courses Small or VIP

One of the key advantages of our RYA Day Skipper training is the intentionally low student-to-instructor ratio. With just four students on board—typically only two aiming for the Day Skipper qualification—you can expect far more personal tuition and hands-on helm time than larger group settings offer.

Smaller group sizes mean you’ll benefit from:

• More time at the helm: You won’t be waiting your turn for hours. Instead, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice skippering, boat handling, and navigating under the direct guidance of your instructor.
• Increased instructor attention: With fewer students, instructors can tailor their coaching to your specific needs, ensuring you master essential skills and gain real confidence as you progress.
• A more personalised experience: From pilotage to berthing, every practical element is given the time and focus it deserves, allowing you to learn at your own pace without feeling rushed.
• A cooperative learning environment: Fewer people on board fosters camaraderie and allows everyone to participate actively without getting lost in the crowd.

Put simply, a smaller group gives you the time, space, and support to truly develop your skills—setting you up for success as you move forward with your sailing ambitions. Call us to talk about this option.

Marinas You’ll Experience During Your Training

Past training routes have included stopovers at Ocean Village Marina, Several of the Hamble Marinas such as Port Hamble / Swanwic / Universal, Yarmouth Harbour, Cowes, Chichester or even Lymington Town. Each marina offers modern amenities—think welcoming bars, cosy bistros, laundry facilities, well-stocked shops, and hot showers to recharge after a day on the water—all designed to complement the comfort of your yacht.

These overnight stops not only break up your practical training with a bit of shoreside relaxation, but they also provide a taste of life as a cruising skipper, as you’ll learn how to settle the yacht in different harbour settings.

Facilities at Marinas During Your Course

Weather and Tidal Considerations

Courses and events are planned with close attention to current weather and tidal forecasts, using trusted sources like the UK Met Office and National Tide and Sea Level data. Should conditions be deemed unsuitable for safe boating—whether due to strong winds, poor visibility, or significant tidal shifts—sessions may be postponed or adapted at short notice.

Safety remains the guiding principle throughout. If adjustments are needed to ensure participant safety, instructors will communicate changes quickly and clearly, so you’ll always know what to expect. There’s no compromise here: while plenty of skills can be learned on dramatic seas, your wellbeing takes precedence over any itinerary.

Please be aware that RYA Day Skipper Training Courses completed in the Solent and other tidal waters can be demanding.

This training course is held in high regard with yacht charter companies worldwide due to the challenging waters, winds, tides and busy waterways you will encounter.

Training courses run in the non-tidal waters of the Mediterranean are generally not accepted by the UK yacht charter industry. Our RYA Day Skipper training course also qualifies you for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Our RYA Day Skipper training courses have 4 to 5 students. We aim it at a mixture of RYA Competent Crew and trainee RYA Day Skipper students per boat. All Students are able to live and stay on board the yacht for the duration of the training course.

In some instances sharing a cabin may be required.

What if I don’t have enough sailing experience?

If you find yourself a bit shy on the sailing logbook front, don’t fret—there are practical steps you can take to get shipshape. Before enrolling in advanced courses, it’s a smart move to chalk up additional time at sea to boost both your confidence and your skills.

Here are a few tips to help fill in those experience gaps:

• Sign up for reputable sailing mileage or experience-building passages, particularly those that focus on tidal waters.
• Aim for at least 10 days of hands-on, active crewing—about half of which you may have already completed in entry-level courses.
• Consider attending a classroom-based theory course to deepen your navigation and seamanship knowledge; in-person settings often offer clearer explanations and more opportunities to ask questions.
• Use practice logs to track your time on the water, whether you’re taking part in club sails, crewing opportunities, or organized flotillas.

If you’re unsure about your readiness, don’t hesitate to reach out to course providers or instructors for tailored advice. The right preparation sets you up for a safe and successful journey, both in the classroom and on the water.

Our Chief Instructor says this about the RYA Day Skipper Practical Training Course:

Sailing is always about the journey, an adventure you embark upon every time you set sail.

To make the most out of your time on the training course with us my advice is to make sure you have the right experience before doing the RYA Day Skipper training course. You should have the basic skill sets of being able to tack, gybe and be able to help in hoisting and dropping the sails.

You should have some good knot skills and have theory knowledge up to RYA Day Skipper Theory level including being able to do a tidal curve, course to steer, know basic Collision Regulations, day shapes and lights, fix a position on a chart, take bearings and convert them from either Compass or magnetic back to true bearings and identify marks and hazards as you sail along on your journey.

Sailing is always about having fun, visiting new places, meeting new people and building links with fellow sailors. You are going to be put under some pressure, and your knowledge will be tested but also built up and improved. There will be some long days, and something will always not quite work, but always remember to have fun and be safe.

We also offer our Complete RYA Day Skipper Combination Package which includes both the theory and practical training courses. This will take you from having a little sailing experience through to passing your RYA Day Skipper first time round.

What’s Next After Completing the Day Skipper Course?

Once you’ve wrapped up your Day Skipper Practical training, you might be wondering where to set sail next on your nautical journey. Building on your skills doesn’t mean you have to jump straight into the deep end—there are plenty of ways to deepen your knowledge and chart your progress at your own pace.

Further Training & Course Options

Consider the following avenues to keep your skills sharp and your logbook growing:

• Mileage & Experience Building
Join organized sailing events or day trips focused on racking up hours at sea. This hands-on time provides invaluable real-world experience—think of it as rehearsal before the big show.
• Sail Handling & Marina Maneuvering Workshops
Practice makes perfect when it comes to sail trim, docking, and close-quarters maneuvering. Short specialist workshops can turn “awkward arrivals” into smooth entries.
• Yacht Chartering
Chartering a yacht—whether you’re taking the helm solo, gathering friends, or hiring a skipper—lets you put your skills to use in new locations, both at home and overseas.
• RYA First Aid at Sea
Adding emergency first aid to your repertoire keeps both you and your crew safer during any adventure.
• Navigation & Theory Refresher
A refresher in navigation and theory (such as Coastal/Yachtmaster Theory) is a smart move before advancing to the next practical course.
• Marine Diesel Engine Course
Even if you prefer wind over engine, understanding basic engine troubleshooting is an asset—and it can save the day when things get a little too quiet.
• Mile Building Voyages
For those aiming to progress to Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster, longer passages help accumulate the required sea miles, introduce new waters, and increase your confidence.

In short, every nautical mile counts. Investing in additional courses and hands-on time afloat ensures you’re prepared for whatever waters you decide to explore next.
