Course Prerequisites: No assumed knowledge

Minimum Age: No minimum but Under 16’s must be accompanied by adult. Persons aged 16+ can be unaccompanied subject to other pre-requisites having been met

Who is the course for:

This course is perfect for anyone who feels they need to gain some knowledge in how diesel engines operate and are maintained, as well as understanding how to fix them should the worst happen at sea.

 

What we cover on the course:

The one-day course teaches the principles of diesel engine operation, the systems and parts of the engine, fault finding and rectification of common problems, routine maintenance and winter lay-up procedures.

You will have plenty of hands-on time with our training engines. They are all fully-functional working engines that we use for training purposes.

Each year the Coastguard get hundreds of distress calls about non-functioning engines and related issues. Don’t become one of those calls!

We’ll teach you how to service and maintain engines, including things like changing waterpump impellers, oil and fuel filters, bleeding the fuel system and injectors, diagnosing faults and how to rectify them.

We will highlight which issues are the most commonplace and how to avoid them in the first place. We’ll talk about engine servicing regimes and how to schedule your engine maintenance each year and the parts needed.

What You’ll Learn: The Course Syllabus

To ensure you leave feeling confident, the course covers a comprehensive range of topics, including:

  • Principles of the diesel engine
    Understand how and why diesel engines work, focusing on the four-stroke cycle and the differences between naturally aspirated engines, turbocharging/intercooling, and supercharging.
  • The fuel system
    Get familiar with the entire fuel system, from the types of tanks and water-separating pre-filters, through to the fuel lift pump, engine fine filter, injection pump, injectors, and the all-important art of bleeding the system.
  • The cooling system
    Learn the difference between seawater and freshwater cooling systems, how temperature is regulated by thermostats, and how the seawater impeller pump works—and how to change it before it leaves you stranded.
  • The air systems
    Discover how air gets in and out of your engine and why these pathways matter for performance and reliability.
  • Engine electrical systems
    Cover the essentials of the electrical system, battery capacity and care, drive belts, and alternator maintenance—so you’re not left powerless at sea.

You’ll also get practical guidance on winter lay-up procedures and checklists for keeping your engine healthy year-round.

We cover in detail how to change fuel filters, oil filters, impellers, and belts—essential maintenance tasks every boat owner should know. Plus, your instructor will guide you through the process of making simple but effective marine engine repairs, so you’ll feel confident getting yourself out of trouble and safely underway if problems arise.

Basic Spares & Tool Kit—What Should You Carry?

One of the best ways to safeguard against engine trouble is to carry a carefully-chosen set of basic spares and tools whenever you’re out on the water. Having the right kit can mean the difference between a quick fix and a long day waiting for help.

Here’s what we recommend you keep onboard for peace of mind:

  • Spare engine oil and coolant: Always have enough for topping up if levels run low unexpectedly.
  • Fuel and oil filters: A blocked filter is one of the most common causes of engine issues at sea.
  • Drive belts: Carry spares for alternator and water pump belts—these are notorious for snapping at the worst moments.
  • Waterpump impeller and gasket: An absolute must, as impellers can deteriorate or break without warning.
  • Spare fuses and bulbs: For both the engine’s electrical systems and navigation lights.
  • Assorted hose clips (jubilee clips): Useful for securing hoses and pipes in a pinch.
  • A set of matching hose and fuel line (short lengths): In case a section becomes split or cracked.
  • Basic toolkit: Include screwdrivers, socket set, adjustable spanners, pliers, and a small hammer.
  • WD-40 or similar spray lubricant: Perfect for loosening stubborn parts and protecting metal from corrosion.
  • Spare set of engine keys (if applicable): Don’t get caught out by a dropped or lost set!

A bit of preparation means you’ll be ready to deal with most minor engine issues on the spot, helping you keep adventuring while everyone else is still on hold to the Coastguard!

This course is an essential for any skipper. It’s vital that you know how to trouble-shoot your boat engine should the worst happen.

Your engine is your secondary means of propulsion, so being able to change the engine and gearbox oil, waterpump impeller, bleeding the fuel system and changing a drive or fan belt really is something all boat users should know how to do.
