Recommended Reading: Sailing magazines and newspapers, but this is not essential 

Course Prerequisites: No assumed knowledge

Minimum Age: No minimum but Under 16’s must be accompanied by adult. Persons aged 16+ can be unaccompanied subject to other pre-requisites having been met

What to Bring

To ensure you get the most out of your time on the water, we recommend you come prepared with:

  • Comfortable clothing, in the summer swimwear may be needed if we can go for a swim when at anchor
  • A towel
  • Sun protection, such as suncream and sunglasses
  • Weather-appropriate layers (think windproof/showerproof jackets—it’s the Solent, after all)
  • A spare pair of closed-toe shoes that can get wet
  • Sufficient drinks and a reusable water bottle
  • Your own packed lunch and any snacks you fancy for the day

A little preparation goes a long way to helping you stay comfortable, focused, and ready for an action-packed course!

Who is the course for:

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is designed for anyone who wants to start their exciting and adventurous powerboat journey the right way!

 

 

With little or no prior knowledge of being on a RIB, the two-day RYA Powerboat Level 2 course will give you the building blocks you need to start your journey.

With training from qualified RYA instructors on board our boat, this 2 day beginner / novice friendly course runs all year round at our RYA Training Centre with immediate access to the open water of the Solent

What we cover on the course:

This course is perfect for when you go on holiday and hire a small powerboat to nip from port to port, or explore those secluded beaches and bays in those hot climates.

This course teaches the basics of boat handling, safety and navigation, and skills at planing speed.

The Powerboat Level 2 course gives you a comprehensive grounding and a good skill-set that will put you in good stead to skipper a powerboat on your next boating trip.

Our RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses have a ratio of three students to one Instructor.

During the course you will cover:

  • Collision regulations and rules of the road
  • Anchoring
  • Knowledge of safety equipment
  • Turning in confined spaces and close quarter handling
  • Coming alongside a pontoon and securing to a mooring buoy
  • Man overboard techniques
  • Towing
  • Planing speed manoeuvres
  • Pilotage and passage planning

This course is suitable for anyone with or with out boating experience as this covers the basics of what you need to safely take you and your family / friends out for a days powerboating.

In the UK or abroad with the Powerboat level 2, it will allow you to convert the certificate into the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which is what you need to charter a boat outside of the UK.

It’s the perfect course for getting into boating and putting a toe in the water.

Included Kit and Clothing

We want you to feel comfortable, safe, and ready for action from the moment you step aboard. That’s why your course fee covers all the essential clothing and equipment you’ll need for your training:

  • Foul Weather gear (this is a jacket and long trousers to keep you dry in the spray)
  • Life jacket for that all-important safety and peace of mind

Just bring yourself, some enthusiasm, and a change of clothes for after—everything else is sorted.

Typical Daily Schedule

Wondering what a day on your RYA Powerboat Level 2 course looks like? Here’s how your time afloat (and on shore) is typically spent:

  • Arrival & Welcome: We’ll get you signed in for the day from 9:00am, ensuring you have all the necessary kit and are ready for action. Our friendly team will brief you and answer any last-minute questions before heading to the boats. Don’t forget to have a cup of tea and coffee when you arrive!
  • Morning On the Water: Once everyone is kitted out, you’ll join your instructor for a hands-on morning session. Expect a mix of practical skills and confidence-boosting drills—don’t worry, you’ll be learning as you go!
  • Lunch Break: Around midday ish, we pause for lunch and a chance to refuel—bring a packed lunch or grab a bite locally there are lots of places with in 2 minutes of walking for a lovley selection of food.
  • Afternoon Session: After lunch, it’s back to the water for more skills practice. You’ll cover new scenarios and build on the techniques learnt in the morning, keeping things varied and engaging throughout.
  • Sign Out & Finish: We typically wrap up around 4:30pm, then you’ll be ready to swap stories of nautical heroics with you friends and family when you get home.

Every session is guided by our experienced RYA instructors and tailored for maximum enjoyment and learning, so you get the most from each day!

Course formats & details:

Courses run in a choice of two formats:

  • 2 consecutive days – Between Monday – Friday
  • Weekends – Saturday & Sunday

We are now able to offer overnight accommodation aboard one of our fleet yachts on a bunk-only basis, for a small additional fee. This is subject to boat availability during summer months when we get very busy.

Fancy going VIP and having your own exclusive private course for you and your friends or family? You can book the whole powerboat just for your own exclusive course from only £249 per person. Enjoy the course in style, with up to three persons on the boat being taught by one of our friendly, experienced RYA qualified Instructors! What a way to start your powerboat adventure!

RYA VHF/SRC Radio

The RYA SRC/VHF Radio Course is minimum qualification required by law to operate the VHF or VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel carrying a radio. This is also for anyone who wants to operate a marine radio at sea, weather it is on a Kayak or paddle board, to operating a RIB, Jet ski or a Yacht. This course is one of them you need to stay safe on the water.
