We understand life can throw up the occasional choppy waters, so instalment payments are available to spread the payment out before your course—just get in touch to arrange what works best for you. Online vs classroom delivery for your RYA day skipper theory course

We offer the RYA day skipper theory course in two formats. The classroom course runs over five consecutive days at our training centre at Gosport Marina. It includes face to face tuition, group exercises, and access to our chart plotter simulator. The online course lets you study at your own pace from home, with tutor support by email and phone.

Both options cover the same RYA Day Skipper theory syllabus: navigation, safety, meteorology, collision regulations, passage planning, and engine checks. The key difference is pace. Classroom students complete in one week. Online students typically take 4-8 weeks. Choose whichever suits your schedule.

The RYA day skipper theory course is a prerequisite for the Day Skipper practical course. It is also valuable for anyone who wants to charter a yacht — many charter companies require evidence of theory training before they will let you take a boat out.

FAQ about the Day Skipper theory course

How long is the course?

The classroom course is 5 days, typically 9am to 5pm. The online course is self-paced with 40-60 hours of study material.

Is there an exam?

Yes. The course concludes with a 2-hour exam paper. A pass mark of 60% is required. You can retake if needed.

Do I need any previous qualifications?

No formal qualifications are needed, but you should have some sailing experience. The RYA recommends at least 2 days experience and 50 logged sea miles before starting the theory course.

Can I do the theory course after the practical?

Yes, but we recommend doing theory first. The navigation and meteorology knowledge will make your practical week far more productive.

Course Prerequisites: Some sailing experience is helpful, although not essential

Maximum Student Numbers: We run this course with a maximum of 6 students, so you get lots of instructor time, unlike some other centres who run up to 12 at a time.

Minimum Age: No minimum but Under 16’s must be accompanied by adult. Persons aged 16+ can be unaccompanied subject to other pre-requisites having been met

This course will enable students to safely plan and undertake day passages in familiar waters, understand navigational lights and buoys, with a theoretical introduction to making a night passage, returning to a port of safe haven. This is the gateway theory course to chartering yachts anywhere in the UK and the world. With the skills learnt on the course you will have a good, solid grounding ready to start your adventures.

Do I need previous sailing experience?

Not at all! While some prior time on the water or knowledge of basic sailing terms can be helpful, it isn’t mandatory to join the RYA Day Skipper Theory course. The most important thing you’ll need is a genuine enthusiasm to learn and a willingness to get stuck in. Many students arrive with only their curiosity and leave with the confidence to plan and safely navigate passages. If you’ve got the motivation, we’ll support you every step of the way.

Resit and Retake Options

We’re committed to helping our students succeed. Should you be unable to complete your RYA Day Skipper Theory course, or if you don’t quite get the result you hoped for, you won’t be left adrift. We offer the chance to resit or re-join a future course at no additional cost (with the exception of exam fees where applicable). This applies to both our theory and practical courses up to Day Skipper level.

Purpose of the Day Skipper Theory Course

The Day Skipper Theory course exists to build a strong foundation for anyone eager to navigate and handle a yacht confidently. Whether you’re an aspiring skipper or an inexperienced crew member hoping to up your game, this course focuses on practical knowledge—like interpreting charts, plotting routes, understanding basic weather patterns, and grasping the essentials of seamanship.

By the end of the course, participants are equipped to make safe, informed decisions on the water and take the helm in familiar cruising grounds with assurance.

Who is the course for:

The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is designed for anyone who has a basic sailing knowledge who wants to undertake further training in order to become a safe and competent Skipper. Successful completion of this course and the RYA Day Skipper Practical course qualifies students for their International Certificate of Competence (ICC), allowing them to confidently plan and complete passages in familiar waters and charter yachts in the UK and abroad.

You’ll gain the essential background knowledge required to skipper a small yacht safely by day in familiar waters. The course provides the theoretical foundation needed to understand navigation, seamanship, and safety—ensuring you’re well prepared for the practical challenges of skippering, whether you’re plotting a coastal route or returning to a welcoming port after a day on the water.

As a guide we would recommend an absolute minimum of five days (or 100 nautical miles) of tidal waters yacht sailing experience as an active crew member. This requirement is usually obtained by taking the RYA Competent Crew course. However, If you are short of a few days experience then why not try one of our sailing mile builders!

We sometimes find that students with less than this level of experience struggle to pass and complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory course.

What we cover on the course:

The course covers the basics of seamanship, nautical terms, rope-work, anchor-work, the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage, chart-work, and publications for navigation, electronic charts, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, dead reckoning and estimating your position, weather forecasting and meteorology, tides, collision regulations, day shapes and lights, construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat, stability and boat characteristics, emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and liferafts.

Please be aware that RYA Day Skipper Courses completed in the Solent and other tidal waters are demanding. This course is held in high regard with yacht charter companies worldwide due to the challenging waters, winds, tides and busy waterways you will encounter. Courses run in the non-tidal waters of the Mediterranean are generally not accepted by the UK yacht charter industry. Our Day Skipper course also qualifies you for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

By the end, you’ll have a toolkit of skills ranging from meteorology basics to plotting a safe and efficient route—everything you need to become a competent skipper in coastal environments.

Course formats & details:

Courses run over a choice of three formats:

  • 5 consecutive days: (Monday to Friday)
  • 5 consecutive days: (Wednesday to Sunday)
  • 2 consecutive Weekends: (First weekend incl a Friday)

At additional cost we can provide a bunk-only aboard one of our Fleet yachts, which is cheaper than any local hotels.

This is on a bunk-only basis and does not include any meals, however there is unlimited tea and coffee on the course, plus you can use the facilities in the marina as much as you want.

If you’re interested in staying onboard during your course at Gosport, just let us know when booking—accommodation is subject to availability, but it’s an ideal option for those looking to immerse themselves in the sailing environment and avoid the hassle (and expense) of booking a hotel.

Can I Take the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course Online?

Absolutely. For those unable to attend in-person sessions, the RYA Day Skipper Theory course is also available as an online option. This provides you with the flexibility to learn at your own pace and from the comfort of home, making it ideal for fitting around a busy schedule or long-distance travel. The syllabus and outcomes remain the same as the classroom-based version, ensuring you gain the same solid foundation in navigation, seamanship, and safety.

Whether you’re based in the UK or overseas, you can enrol and complete your coursework entirely online. Many providers, such as Top Sail Insurance, even cater to online learners with supplementary information on insurance for digital courses and sailing preparation. Online learning can be a great route if you require a flexible approach or if attending in person simply isn’t possible.

The RYA Day Skipper Theory course is one of the best introductions to navigation that a budding Skipper can get. This course will give you a good working knowledge of how to pilot a boat from port to port. It’s a perfect starting point to give you the best foundation, enabling you to continue your sailing career all the way through to a professional Skipper.

To make the most out of your time on the course with us my advice is to make sure you have the right experience before doing the course. You should have the basic skill sets of being able to identify all the parts of a sailing yacht, know how a compass works and ideally have some practical sailing experience. We always recommend that the student does some advance reading of books included in our “recommended reading” list at the top of the page.

Course Structure and Study Commitments

The course consists of approximately 40 hours of tuition and study time, plus breaks. It’s a comprehensive programme, supported by an excellent set of RYA materials as well as our own additional notes to reinforce your learning. Our instructors are always happy to be contacted if you have questions or need help with any aspect of the material—no need to struggle alone!

It’s generally a good idea to bring along a selection of Note books, pencils, sharpener, eraser, calculator and ruler, as there is a lot to write down and good notes taken during the day are worth their weight in gold! (If you forget some bits don’t worry we will lend you some of ours if we can)  Make sure those pencils are well-sharpened! It’s also well worth buying your own Plotter and Dividers before the course, or on the day (We have plenty in stock at all times!).

We give our students a little bit of homework each night to ensure they’ve grasped what was taught during the day. It all helps soak up the incredible amount of information and knowledge you’ll learn on this course, which is held

from 9am to 5pm each day with one of our brilliant Yachtmaster Instructors.

 

Our course fee includes all the equipment and tools needed to successfully complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory course, with no extras needed (use of our plotters and dividers is included). Also included within the course fee is the RYA Day Skipper Shorebased Notes book.

We also offer our Complete RYA Day Skipper Combination Package which includes both the theory and practical courses. This will take you from having a little sailing experience through to passing your RYA Day Skipper first time round if you follow the instructors advice.

The RYA Day Skipper Sail Course runs over five days and brings students with at least the RYA Competent Crew Sail qualification (or knowledge to that level as minimum) and some sailing experience, up to skipper level.

What makes the RYA day skipper practical course different

The RYA Day Skipper practical course is where you stop being crew and start being skipper. Over five days on the Solent, you will take command of a Bavaria yacht under the supervision of an RYA instructor. You will plan passages, make navigational decisions, and manage the crew.

The Solent is one of the best places in the UK to train for your Day Skipper practical. Tidal streams, commercial shipping, and busy harbours mean you get real experience of skippering in challenging conditions. You will visit ports like Portsmouth, Cowes, and Yarmouth, practicing berthing alongside and picking up mooring buoys. Successful completion prepares you for the RYA Coastal Skipper practical course.

Prerequisites: RYA Competent Crew (or equivalent experience) and the RYA Day Skipper theory certificate. You should have logged at least 5 days, 100 sea miles, and 4 night hours on a sailing yacht.

This Course in Summer?

You may notice that the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical isn’t often scheduled during June, July, or August. This is quite intentional. One of the key elements of this advanced course is meaningful night sailing experience. The long daylight hours of summer simply don’t allow us to provide enough genuine night time navigation for every student. To ensure you gain real-world skills—like plotting courses in darkness and handling a yacht after sunset—we schedule these courses more at times of year when darkness reliably falls early enough for proper night passages.

Every aspect of the course is designed for focused, in-depth learning. We limit numbers to just four students per yacht, all learning at the same advanced level. This lets our RYA instructors tailor tuition to the needs of budding Coastal Skippers. Please note: students must be at least 17 years old, and anyone under 18 will need a parent or guardian on board. But don’t worry we do run them but we have smaller numbers in the summer so we can get those night hours in!

What the RYA coastal skipper practical course covers

The RYA Coastal Skipper practical course is the advanced level of RYA training. This is not a beginners course. You should already hold your Day Skipper qualification and have logged at least 800 sea miles with 30 night hours. The course pushes your navigation, boat handling, and decision making to a professional standard.

Over five days on the Solent, you will plan and execute coastal passages using tidal height and stream information, manage the yacht at night, and handle emergency situations. The Solent gives you varied conditions for this training — busy shipping lanes, restricted waters, and challenging tidal gates at Hurst Narrows and the Needles passage.

Successful completion of the Coastal Skipper practical course qualifies you to skipper a yacht up to 150 miles from a safe haven, day and night. It is also a prerequisite for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster Offshore exams.
